One of our most popular baked offerings is an item we dubbed "Rudy-in-a-Parka" It is our Alaska version of a typical American Pig-in-a-Blanket (basically a hot dog wrapped in dough and baked). Ours is reindeer sausage - hence, Rudy (Rudolph) - stuffed with cheese then wrapped in our potato dough then baked. Adam Richman of the Travel Channel's Man vs. Food came to the Roadhouse in 2009 and loved the Rudy. People ask for them by name and it is time we had an image of Rudy-in-a-Parka we can put on a shirt and possibly turn into a stuffed animal.
I have often imagined Rudy to be pictured wearing only a parka and coyly looking back with thick lashed eyes over her shoulder. Not unlike a pinup from the 1940s...Betty Grable-esque. With that said, I'm not quite sure if Rudy is male or female. I'm open to that interpretation at this point.
Our Roadhouse dates back to the mid-40's and is a true Alaskan roadhouse, open year round providing a warm and homey place for travelers and locals alike to rest, eat and swap stories.
Rudy-in-a-Parka is a huge hit with kids and we incorporate it as an After School Snack Special (Rudy, small cookie and small milk for $5 as long as the kid does homework while munching). We also sell the Chili Rudy: Rudy-in-a-Parka covered in either Black Bean or Reindeer Chili, topped with cheese and onion. It's FANTASTIC!
Rudy is definitely a player and likes all the attention. We are often just flabbergasted at the popularity. It's sausage, cheese and bread, after all. But...comfort food it is!
